ESS manages that cycle for its clients as part of ongoing support, so taking an update is routine and your teams keep benefiting from the latest IFS innovation.

Custom fields, custom entities, projections, events, workflow and configuration let organizations tailor IFS Cloud to their processes, and extensions built this way are designed to carry forward through release updates. ESS has deep experience here: it maintains over 1,900 custom-layer objects across an IFS estate and has extended 46 IFS components, all built to supported extension points so the environment stays upgrade-safe. That combination of platform flexibility and disciplined delivery gives you a system that fits your business and stays current.
IFS Cloud can run as an IFS-managed cloud service, in your own cloud infrastructure, or on-premise where regulation, sovereignty or connectivity constraints require it — the same product rather than a reduced-function variant per deployment model. For most organizations the managed cloud option is the sensible default, because it hands the infrastructure and much of the update mechanics to the vendor. Where the decision needs real thought is in defense, critical infrastructure and some regulated public-sector contexts, where data residency or air-gap requirements drive the answer regardless of preference. Worth confirming current specifics with IFS directly during evaluation, since deployment options and their commercial terms are the kind of thing that evolves between releases.
Through documented interfaces rather than direct database access: REST and OData APIs expose the application's projections, and IFS Connect handles messaging, file-based flows and the middleware-style routing that most ERP landscapes still need for older counterparties and EDI. The practical advantage of building against documented contracts is that release updates do not silently break your integrations the way reverse-engineered database access does. Often less than you would expect, and sometimes not at all. Lobbies provide role-based dashboards inside the application, which means the numbers appear where the work is being done rather than in a tool people have to remember to open — and operationally that is usually worth more than analytical sophistication. Where a dedicated BI platform still earns its place is cross-system analysis that spans IFS and other sources, heavy historical modelling, or an existing enterprise BI standard you are not going to abandon.
